The BasicBooks General Ledger is a graphical, ``front-end'' interface to the Postgres Data Base system. Postgres is a complete SQL data base system available free of charge and is shipped with most versions of Linux. All BasicBooks General Ledger data files are maintained in Postgres and may also be accessed and manipulated with standard SQL commands. The full power and capabilities of SQL is not restricted in any way by the BasicBooks General Ledger.
In order to run the BasicBooks General Ledger you must have Postgres installed and the Postmaster running on your computer. For instructions on how to do this see the Postgres documentation or ask your system administrator to set up Postgres for your access. The BasicBooks General Ledger will automatically create all the data base files needed by the program when Postgres is properly installed and the Postmaster is running.
The BasicBooks General Ledger is built on the GTK+ and GDK graphical libraries and will run on any Linux system which supports X Windows. This gives The BasicBooks General Ledger a full, easy to use, Graphical User Interface. When running The BasicBooks General Ledger you can get a short prompting note for any entry field by holding the cursor over that field. Extensive help is also available from within the windows of the BasicBooks General Ledger by clicking the HELP buttons and this manual is available by selecting HELP from the Main Menu.
You may run the BasicBooks General Ledger from any directory in which you have both read and write permissions.
